I am wondering if it could be "Ceremony" ... the song was originally sung by Ian Curtis and performed by Joy Division. After Ian's untimely death another version was recorded by New Order with Bernard on vocals in 1981. This version can be heard on the 1987 double-CD "Substance".
Not sure where you could get an mp3 but the song has been covered at least twice in the modern synthpop scene (Echoing Green, and Pop Star Who Kills ... the pswk version is at http://www.mp3.com/pswk ... ). Is this the song you heard?

Just as a FYI, "Ceremony" was also covered by Atlantic Popes on the Synthphony Records New Order Tribute. I only note this because I just finished writing my review of the disc..
