We are contemplating adding a Live Journal interface for members. It would be simple at first, but if it was being used we would enhance it with time and integrate it with the rest of the site.

Shout out if you would actually use this...

No, I wouldn't use it, I'd use Livejournal or Diaryland because they've been doing that for years now and already have the kinks worked out.

Well, from the perspective of doing whatever you can to keep as many people within the confines of your advertising space, sounds like a good idea...

In practice, those who have live journals might not be so interested in moving them, and with the initial limited funtionality many would say that they can get the same thing for free somewhere else, but better...

Just playing devil's advocate but do you want to be a vertically concentrated content provider/online community or a web-presence hosting provider? The trick is to understand that answering "both" means you really need to entirely stop concentrating on the relatively small electronic music community to have any success. Every "hosted application" you add beyond the forums and the streaming music adds potential overhead and support requirements. If those "hosted applications" are already done better elsewhere then why add them unless that's a business you want to be in?

Just food for thought from someone whose job has been to consult on this stuff for years... dilution is always a concern and has been the failing move of many online communities. (because people stopped taking that online community as seriously as it tried to become a "one-stop-shop")

Dave

Maybe a casino would work in keeping people coming to this site.....It works for all those Indian Reservations.

Well....
being one who doesn't have a Live Journal on the livejournal.com page...I MIGHT use it. I'm not willing to start one on the other site because,...well...I spent too much time on this site already from work. Don't have time to be going to different sites all day. If I could do everything I do all day on one site..then that would be great. :-)

OK, that's an interesting statement to discuss as far as Online communities in general go. What defines an online community? What features would you want from an online community ON TOP of the "Vertical" content??

See here's the rub. EGN could build Rome again after adding all these features... (OK, a bit of an exhaggeration, it's very easy to program any of this stuff... shell mods of diarys, forums, content managers, various membership managers, etc, in PHP, ASP, etc. are all over the place)

Is it worth their while to?

I kinda see my posts as my journal already...I mean, they are my thoughts, and I am completely open in what I type...The members here who have met me in person can vouch that I am the same person you see spending all of his time here...

All in all, if it were instated, I would try it out, why not??? But I can't honestly say that I would be posting anything exciting really...When I stop to think about it, all of my closer friends, and aqquaintences here already know what I do on the weekends, and what's happening in my life...

Read this, Admins, this is an interesting thought...

You already have Instant Message, Private Messaging, and Forums in place. So, the concept of a journal isn't all that far fetched... The key here, however, strictly from a functional standpoint is that you may want to seriously consider brainstorming your integration of live journalling. If you notice how LJ works, funtionally, essentially every piece of content can have a thread attached to it. (Similar to how these forums work) I really think that's a wonderful model.

Baseline, you also want to make sure you tie the whole thing back to have the capabilities of turning on email notifications when a thread is touched so that conversations don't break up.

Just some thoughts... Once again, you're building a community here, interaction is one of your strongest points... And you already have (with the way you've built your forums) a strong piece of software that could be reverse engineered into a journalling app.
