My main musical genre, the one that really gets my blood pumping, is the blues. B.B. King, Taj Mahal, Lightnin' Hopkins, and local bands like The Laughing Man (http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/183/the_laughing_man.html). Just gets my juices flowing.

Besides that, there's always going to be a little bit of a classical lover (mostly baroque) in me, good showtunes, ethereal stuff, celtic (I'm going to see Young Dubliners, Great Big Sea, and Seven Nations in 2 weeks!), glam (Bowie, T. Rex, Roxy Music, etc), and, lately, and almost frighteningly, some country. None of this Travis Tritt ¤¤¤¤, but Johnny Cash, Hank WIlliams Sr, that good old music of pain.

~OLMEK
August 12th, 2002, 09:19 PM
That's interesting. I've listened close to 90% of the artists mentioned in this thread, with the exception of the Rock en Espanol that NinosDelBrasil listed, but am I the only "Synthpop" addict who also listens to real Hip Hop?

(i.e. - Eminem = Rap / The Roots = Hip Hop / Dr. Dre = Rap / Gang Starr = Hip Hop)

I enjoy my wide array of interest when it comes to music, and love to explore various forms of it's artistic creations and origins. It's a shame that many people refrain from learning more or ignoring a certain genre of music due to the filthy or negative portrayal glamorized and/or concentrated on by mass media outlets, charts, and the general population of music 'listeners'.

For those who don't empathize, think of the following analogy. Most people who are unfamiliar with Synthpop would say that current artists like Wolfsheim, VNV Nation, Mesh, De/Vision and others sound redundant or are just repeating what was already done in the 80's, and therefore lack interest in learning more.

What are your thoughts? I'm curious.

Cool thread... Hmm, "non-synthpop" is what comprises a majority percentage of my CD library. I don't even know if I'd classify the music >I< make as "Synthpop". Ehh... another thread entirely.. anyways:

No particular order:

Ani Di Franco, Indigo Girls, Dave Matthews Band, Simon & Garfunkel, Cat Stevens, Warren Zevon, Frank Zappa, Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, Thelonius Monk, Roxy Music, David Sylvian (solo work), Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, Tori Amos, Enya, Barenaked Ladies, Ben Folds, They Might Be Giants, Live, Cecil Taylor, Alison Moyet, The Cure, The Smiths, John Coltrane.... dozens more classical and jazz giants too numerous to name individually... and usually I get in a fix or two of mainstream "whatever's on the radio" music once or twice a week while driving around with my wife..... I love music in general.. probably why I majored in it.

You ever see that commercial on tv for that guy that plays the pan flute... that's what I listen to!!!

by the way, what the hell is a pan flute...

and, why do the voice overs for those commercials always say something like "...the sound that has thrilled generations."

I asked my grandmother one time if she listed to the pan flute and she almost slapped me. She didn't even know what the hell I was talking about.

I mostly listen to bands that I wouldn't really consider synthpop, but perhaps they'd fall under the category of 'gothic;' I'm not entirely sure. My friends call my music 'dark and depressing,' but that's why I LIKE it! I pay close attention to lyrics, and I like lyrics I can relate to. The fact that they tend toward 'dark and depressing' says something about me, I suppose.

Other than that, I like eclectic/exotic-type music, deep house, breakbeat, rock, and sometimes....even show tunes! :)

Here's a list of artists I like that are not synthpop (not in my opinion, anyway):

the Smiths
the Cure
This Mortal Coil
Dead Can Dance
Nine Inch Nails
Shriekback
Sisters of Mercy
Altered Images
Bauhaus
Peter Gabriel
Pink Floyd
Marillion
the Stranglers
Moby
the Pogues
Aimee Mann
Styx
Journey (no, I'm not ashamed)
the Who
Simon and Garfunkel
Royksopp
Sigur Ros
Spiritualized
Diamanda Galas
Type O Negative
Rammstein

and some of my favorite house/breakbeat artists, dj's, etc.:

Fat Boy Slim
Deep Dish
B.B. Hayes
Julius Papp
Little Louie Vega
Terrence Toy
Marques Wyatt
Jason Bentley
Frankie Knuckles
Terry Mullan
Victor Simonelli
DJ Icey
Crystal Method
the Prodigy
Chemical Brothers

Wow, I can't believe I didn't reply to this thread yet! :)

Other than synthpop, hmmm...to be honest while I love synthpop, I don't actually listen to it constantly - there's just too much music to have time to listen to just one genre!

So, lessee (and this list changes often):
EBM/00ntzpop of various kinds
Old-skool Industrial (EN, Laibach, etc)
Shoegazer (Lush, MBV, Sigur Ros, etc)
Icelandic pop music (well, Gus Gus, Blake, Hafdis Huld, etc)
IDM
Hip Hop
World pop (currently in Turkey, although I once had a very brief fasciantion with [twitch] J-Pop)
Classic Jazz
Baroque/Period recordings
Folk
Big Band/Swing
Glitch
Various technos/trances/etc
Even a bit o' country if it's the right kind (I have weakness for rockabilly country-pop)

Pretty much the only thing I don't want to listen to is my office-mate off-key whistling christian rock songs. Yuck.
