Okay, first of all I’d like to apologize if this has been asked/answered before. Anyway, gothic fans are called “goths”, industrial fans are called “rivetheads”, techno fans are called “ravers”, etc….. but what are we, as synthpop fans, called? Synthipoppers?

I ask because a friend from work asked if I was a raver, or a goth or what, and I couldn't think of what to tell him!

Tell him that labels are unimportant...Even better, just tell him you listen to Depeche Mode, and your like that, he'll get the general idea...

Okay then just tell him labels are for people who don't understand anything and have to put a name on it to grasp it :)

~WaterDragon

that still doesn't answer my question...

Sure it does...You said what are we called...Tell him you aren't called anything, and then tell him what I just said... :)

I cannot stand by idlely by and be called a "synthpopper" That just reaks of wussiness!

When asked what kind of music I listen to I tell people I have a wide range, but mainly electronic music. More often than not the response I get is "...huh" I don't have too many people ask me to classify myself as a raver or anything else, but if they did I would have to b+tch slap them and tell them that labels for stupid people.

Exactly!!! See, I'm not the only one around here who thinks so...If you want to put a name to associate a certain genre of music, then hey go ahead, but to put a label on yourself is unecessary :)

Basically the same thing I was thinking in the first place, but I just wanted to see if there was a label for us or not.... I guess that answers my question :)

Truth be told though, there are labels for people in certain genres of music, but I have never heard one for someone into synthpop though...

See, thats how cool we are, we don't need a label, we know who we are, and thats all that matters :)

new wavers, new romantics, geek buzzers, technoheads, synthboppers...

;)

i'm dave and i'm a dave.

i dress like a normal 31 year male.

i'm married to a nurse and work as a computer professional.

i happily do NOT have male pattern baldness and i'm tall...
but i'm also overweight... so i'm only half sexy.

i don't wear all black but i like darker clothes. i have pierced ears but haven't worn earrings in 8 years because... well, i don't remember why... but why wear them? to attract my wife? she thinks i look gay in them and I like to discourage having my wife think i'm gay looking.

we have no kids so we're DINKS except right now I'm starting my own consulting company so we're actually SINKS. which isn't a label, it's a place to wash your hands.

i make music in my basement when i'm not working.

we both went to college.

we have two cats and live in the city.

some call me my wife and i yuppies but i prefer professionally encumbered urbanites..

we're vegetarians, we work out almost daily, and take our vitamins.

sometimes we even watch prime time TV although i try not to encourage it.

we take occasional vacations...we don't do clubs because neither of us drink.

we don't do the jesus thing... we do our own thing... but when we became vegetarians we stopped our cermonial chicken dance/sacrifice.... we found tofu to not be a reasonable exeption...

.....

i hate labels too... with a futher muckin passion!!

"so, like are you a gothy guy dave? you listen to all that new wave 80s stuff and ¤¤¤¤... are you into wiccan... did you see that blair witch two movie where that hotty ran around outside naked... wow man, she was hot... do you know girls like that... i like girls like that... naked, i mean... i like naked girls... you wanna go over by the airport and check out the new Hooters?"

(conversation which helped hasten my retirement from my previous employer)

;)

labels... bah

the problem with labels is they limit who you are ...

so i'm a pophead, but i listen to indutrial, techno, blah blah blah

how could i classify myself as only a pophead?

i read, i write, i dance, i work on computers;
i'm a wife, a mother, a sister, a daughter, a friend, a nurse, a taxi driver, a secretary, a counselor, a mechanic, a consultant, a teacher ....

labels, bah.

i am me.

not like you, or him, or them.

Electronic music. Yeah, that's the ticket. Just tell them you listen to electronic music. I always do. Works for me. =)

Electronic music.
Uh huh. That sums it up for me. We are one of the coolest genres around, imo. That's why it is so hard for even us to label us. We are broad, beautiful and dynamic. We look, act and sound different. You can't put a label on that. :)

~WaterDragon

I'll agree, it is very hard to label someone/something that encompass so much. And on another note, I find that when you say, "I listen to electronic music" the first, and only, thing that comes to their narrow, need-to-label-everything minds in techno. And ONLY techno.

I think we should be labeled for what we are..... fans/enthusiasts of music

Well, anyone who knows me or meets me knows I am a huge depeche MODE fan. They also know that I like electronic music. Whether or not they know exactly *what* that is, is another question. I am more than happy to supply the answer to. :D
