View Full Version : Limited Editions - do you bother?

I'm I the only one who gets suckered into buying the limited/special editions of albums? I cannot stand the thought of missing out on some awesome b-side or remix. In the past I've found my favourite song happens to be one of them. For example, the Delerium Poem bonus disc contains one of my all time favourite songs 'Inner Sanctum'. Without that song the release is not complete to me and feel sorry for people that are without it.
And I have regrets about not buying certain limited editions that are long since out of print like the FLA Circuitry double cd single containing 'Hydrogen' - yes, yes I know its available on a later compilation, but still....
Oh and I'm kicking myself now because I guess all the imported In Strict Confidence 'Mistrust the Angels' releases are sold out at Metropolis and now I have to wait until September to buy the goddamned domestic release.... arrg!

I know what you mean... after missing out on a few, I've become paranoid about not having one and regretting it, either that or trying to find it on ebay for some exorbitant price.
Apparently the record companies are doing something right by getting us saps to shell out the cash early for limited editions in fear they'll sell out. Ah, the glories of impulse buying...
As a side note, anyone have opinions on the limited box set for the new hocico disc? I can't decide if I want to spend that much or not, but I hear there aren't many left... (who am I kidding, sure I want to, just a question if my cc can handle it or not).

Actually, they re-released "Poem" about 6 months later and had a different tracklist from the original. They added "Inner Sanctum", along with a remix of "Silence", and removed one or two tracks. Most of it is still intact, but it's weird looking at it and seeing a different tracklist - even the ones they left on are in a different order!
As for limited editions, I usually only buy them if it seems there are a bunch of new or rare tracks. If it's just a digipak thing or something, I pass.

For me it depends on the band, and what exactly makes it such a limited edition...Does it offer bonus tracks, remixes, or live songs??? Thise things also come into play for me...I'm not too fanatical about getting numbered things either...I just not never got into it...JMO :)

I agree with 7red7, it totally depends on which band it is.
I mean, if itīs Alphaville, I wont even bother to look which songs that are on the limited edition.
(I go and buy compliation albums like "best of the 80īs" or the newest one"Absolute synth classics" if I know that AV is featured on them. This means that I got many cds with Forever young, big in japan, sounds like a melody, even though I already have them...)
But then if itīs another artist/band, I think I gotta check out whatīs so special with the edtion before spening money on it.

I do not bother. I have difficulty finding time to shop for cds from all the hundreds of bands I am interested let alone research limited editions and extra tracks.

Ok, I'll bite. What's the difference between the Import and Domestic release? Or what will be the difference? I already have "Mistrust the Angels" (it's great), I ordered it direct from Music Non-Stop. Came in a nice Digi-pack with some fantastic artwork.

I assume that the domestic release which won't be available until September will not come in a nice Digipack and will not have the fancy artwork. I don't know whether there's any extra tracks on it, but I *must* have the limited edition anyway :) I've never ordered from MNS, and it looks like they still have it so I'm gonna have to place an order while I still can - thanks for the heads up!

Well there is a song (I don't have the CD next to me at the moment) that you have to skip back to right when you put the CD into your player, it's tracked at 00. I don't know if that will be included on the domestic, I'm assuming that it's going to be.
Anyway, as I said, the artwork is great, as is the packaging. High gloss and everything. I wish the person who did the photography for the album had a website. I'd order some of his prints in a heartbeat.
I order from MNS all the time. So far, they've been very good about getting me my orders in a timely fashion and packaged well enough as for them not to be damaged via transit. Of all the places I have ordered from, MNS is by far the quickest and nicest.

I usually order from Metropolis (www.industrial-music.com) - why would you buy from MNS overseas except in cases like this where a disc is only available from Europe? Being that they're in Philly and I'm in DC, I usually recieve CD's from Metropolis in 2-3 days max, which is just awesome for any kind of online ordering. I used to often order from Isolation Tank, but they've been getting very slow lately, out of stock a lot, and are losing my business because of it.

I go for limited editions, sometimes. Depends on the band. The only band I'm a completist on is Electronic, which is both a blessing and a curse. A blessing in that they don't have much to find. But a curse, because it's really hard to find the stuff that's out. Electronic have always kinda been below the radar.
But I'm with the guy that said b-sides are often his favorite songs. Same here. I've found so many incredible b-side songs over the years. My favorite song in the world is a b-side from an Electronic single. It's called "I Feel Alright."
Anyway, depends on the band. But I find www.eil.com is a good source for difficult to find things from the bigger bands (DM, PSB, Electronic, New Order, etc). For the smaller bands, I don't know. I've used Hot Stuff a few times, but they're painfully slow getting stuff to me. Any suggestions for good shops to find limited editions and such would be appreciated.

Hey...thanks for that link Mark. I was not aware of that site.
I too get into the whole limited edition buying of CDs...but as well...only for certain bands. Then there are times when I've really kicked myself for not grabbing something in time. Like And One or Wolfsheim limited editions...which I'm now seeking. Anyone want to sell theirs at a reasonable price? hehe

I usually buy from MNS because a good 95-98% of the music I listen to and buy is import. Heh. I listen to so very few American bands. That and the few times I did order from Metropolis directly, all the jewel cases were cracked and they weren't packaged very securely. Also, MNS prices are a bit better, even for domestic releases in some cases.

I'll second the recommendation for MNS. I love these guys. All my orders have always gone smooth, gotten my stuff quick, and the cd's were always in good condition. Sure jewel cases are pretty cheap, but it still pisses me off when I order a bunch of cd's and not a single one has the tabs intact, and all the discs are flopping around. I swear one I got from the metropolis mail order site recently looks like somebody must've put it on the floor and stomped on it a few times. And you also get free shipping from MNS on orders over something like $80 usd.
