Hi guys,
Speakig about charts, I came across this website about PROGRESSIVE DANCE CHART. I think this will be the closest chart that resembles electronic/synthpop/EBM/underground chart outhere compare to that of Billboard Electronic chart (which mostly contains 'mainstream' DANCE music).
However, this website doesn't seem to get updated anymore (TOO BAD). But hey, at least tehre's something outhere that somewhat represents 'underground' movement.
Here's the link:

ENJOY GUYS !!!

Yeah that´s how a chart should look like. Seeing bands like Sweep and Brand new idol on it made me very happy.
Also traces of Assemblage 23, VNV, DM, Human League and many others of our dear bands. This is great.
Thanks for sharing FxBoy!

That's pretty interesting, but I wonder what data they are using to base their charts upon.

AVIL --- You're welcome ! Love to share it with you guys.
RIPPER --- Hmm, I’m not sure what kind of standard they’re using here. There should be an explanation under “Pool Info” on the top of the page; however, the link is “under construction.”
According to my opinion, I would say it’s based on the “CLUB AIRPLAY.” It says so at the top of the page (“NATIONAL ALTERNATIVE CLUB PLAY CHART”). So, most likely it depends on the popularity of those songs being played in clubs/dance floors all over the country (the US).
Hopefully, they will have a new update on the website soon. Meanwhile, isn’t it great to see a lot of underground bands make it to the chart? (Red Flag, Brand New Idol, System 22, Sweep, VNV Nation, Mark Oh, Assemblage 23, etc)

Well that explains things if this is based on club plays.
If it´s a synthclub or something like that, the bands we mentioned are natural to be played there, and gets high on these charts.

Never heard Fragma so can´t say anything about that band/artist.
Well, maybe someday a chart like this will be based on sells...
Wouldn´t that be amazing, both for us and our dear bands we´ve learned to love so much :)

FRAGMA is a mainstream dance group. Lots of their hits can be found in mainstream dance charts like Billboard or U.K Top 40. I wouldn’t consider them as synthpop at all. It’s more like pop/dance stuff. Similar to SYLVER or ALICE DEEJAY.

I have found that the Belgian Top 50 dance chart is pretty good for finding new electronic/dance/europop material in Europe. I believe you can see it here, and it allows you to hear snippits in 28k or broadband:

I didn't say they were synthpop, however, I do like their synthwork, and the vocalist is pleasant to listen to. Unlike Rollergirl, which I can not stand. :p
Perhaps a more broader term, Alternative Dance could apply to the more synth heavy dance groups like Fragma. After all, these groups are no more successful than synthpop was in the 80's, and they called it alternative back then.

Belgium is good for this stuff. Below is a nice link for Belgium dance music.

Sylver
Kate Ryan
Ian Van Dahl
Lasgo
Milk Ince
La Luna
all from Belgium. Some nice tunes, some boring... etc. I've been listening to a lot of instrumental stuff lately... so haven't had to much time for the vocal stuff.

I wouldn't exactly call them mainstream par se. It's not like Fragma is a household name like Britney Spears or crap in that vein. Even the most mainstream of dance music is still relatively unknown.
Except for Fatboy Slim, everyone and their pets seem to be listening to that crap. Now he & Moby, & Chemical Brothers are the stuff everyone seems to know by name & listen to in dance these days.

Are there any plans to have an Electrogarden list? I think that would be a very cool idea. Poll all the users maybe and find out what is being listened to? Just an idea.

Think that would be too chaotic to poll all the users. Maybe all the DJs that are spinning at clubs, and people who have online or college radio programs that are in here would be better. The tasts of EGN members are just all over the map for this, unless there were some very strict rules or something. ... but...an EGN Chart WOULD be interesting in any way...if it was done well.

Good idea, Amorphic.
However, as NoirTech said, it would be hard to create a well-done chart which represents the whole EGNers broad tastes of music. We may limit the chart to synthpop/ambient/industrial/electronic music only.
Still it’s hard to determine which song has better positions than the rests. Is it going to be based on EGNers vote online, retail singles sales (which is even harder to compile nationally), or dance clubs power airplays?
See how complicated it can be? Great idea though if it’s well executed. Any initiator? :-)

Todd does publish a top selling albums on his list. Do other labels in the scene do the same? That could be used to compile part of the chart. Then you would have to take a list of DJs who have weekly nights across the country, and have them send in their playlists. Also compile a playlist from online radio stations and what they play and what gets requested. Wow...this is ALOT of work. LIke FxBoy said....any initiator? :) This would be quite the project.
