View Full Version : guy suing mcdonalds for making him fat

I can (sort of) see both sides of this problem too. From an early age American children are bombarded with commercials, ads, and cute characters associating fun and good times with these fast food establishments. Eventually these kids grow up to become overweight adults with little or no willpower. Of course now you have the issue of personal responsibility. Are these restaurants really to blame when these people are making the conscious decision to eat there. Being an athlete, I have to eat healthy, so it's difficult for me to understand what its like to deal with obesity or the temptation to eat fast food. This is a good topic Stargazer.

This is just rediculous and I hope it gets laughed out of court, which it most likely wont, seeing as how that one woman won her law suit over her coffee being hot when she spilled it on herself. Please. People are looking for any way they can to make a quick easy buck. No one forced this man (or anyone else) to eat at these places or so much of their food. I love Del Taco. Do I eat so much of it that it makes me fat? No. Could I? Sure but I have this little thing called self control. People are fat on fast food because it's easy and people are lazy.
This is just pathetic.

There is only one side to the argument ... the fact that one person cannot control himself and blames someone else for his problem. What a complete and utter joke. Another example of the degradation of our society. No one takes responsibility for their own actions and thus everything becomes "ok".

You guys are certainly right about Americans blaming other people for their problems to make a quick buck. I get tired of seeing those frivolous lawsuits every single day in the newspaper. That being said, I still think these fast food restaurants should stop marketing so heavily to children. A lot of parents don't have enough brains to realize that these kinds of foods are killing their kids when they eat them three times a day. Parental responsibility, that's another issue. Too many underlying problems here.

OMG...this is soooo stupid. People are "sue" happy in this country.
~gordonctrl
July 25th, 2002, 01:22 PM
restrict them in marketing one way, and they will always find another....like cigarette companies...I hate to say this but if people don't have the sense to simply say "no" to their children, they why are they parents?...
Little Timmy---- "I want cheeseburger,I want cheeseburger,I want cheeseburger,I want cheeseburger!!!"
Parental Figure---"No!"
--story ends---
but oh yeah i forgot this is America, land of the free, Home of the Brave and all the rot. America as a Country is overweight, and people just want to play the blame game and get mad cash then maybe..hmmmmmm eating less and work out once in a while. And yes there are those Rare exceptions of humans who have a bizarre gland disorder that is the cause of them being overweight which i acknowledge, but for the most part it's because we as a nation are a collective of television addicts who would rather watch Must see Tv and chuck a Happy meal in front of some offspring rather than take 20 freaking minutes to cook a meal

I'm proud to say that I don't eat fast food.
Well...let me rephrase that. I only eat junk food when there is absolutely nothing else available to eat. ...and when I do have to eat junk food, I try to get the healthiest thing available....which will almost always be a salad..and that's barely.

Well the way I see it, this case is a joke...Parents should be teaching their kids eating habits, not somebody making commercials for McDonald's...It's the parents fault for not bringing up their children with healthy eating habits, so you can't go and blame the fast-food industry for your own problems...
As far as the industry being deceptive and inaccurate with their health specs on their nutrition guides they offer...I wouldn't doubt they bend the truth a bit, but what the hell, it's supposed to be bad for you, thats why so many people love it...
I'm with Seraphim, the Judge should laugh this one out of court, and I'd like to add he orders the Plaintiff to undergo a strict diet and exercise regimen...
Hey I'm a big guy myself, and I like to eat what the hell I want... You won't see me blaming the industry for my problems...I just love to mack down on a Tommy's burger every now and then, can you blame me :D
My 2 cents (and a side of fries)

I got to jump on this bandwagon. You mean, a corporation is supposed to ensure that each and every person that walks through its doors in all of its million locations is eating correctly. Damn and I thought they were working hard enough to get my order right.
Seriously though, I'm a fat muddah-fuggah, and its MY responsibility to ensure that I get proper dietary sustenance. Just because it is there doesn't mean I have to eat it.
Maybe I should sue vons for selling me candy bars.

i agree 100%... people blame everyone else for everything, and no one is willing to take responsibility for their own choices. it's totally ridiculous. now if mcdonalds was advertising their food as healthy that would be one thing... but it's common knowledge that double cheesburgers are bad for you!

I've always wanted to try their food, but I'm scared of clowns. Everytime I approach their building....BAMM! Clown guy is there. On the window, in the kiddy area, in the menu screen. Can't go in, clown will eat me.
So you think I have a case?

Talking about commercials meant for children. You don´t have any laws in the US that forbid companies to do commercial meant for kids? We got one in Sweden, no commercial for children under 12 or something

Hmmm, I am not a big guy myself. So, I’ll have to think about something else then.
I’ll just sue all of those synthpop records for making me buying all of their stuff. They have turned me into a synthpop addict & it makes me broke !!! I should’ve been a millionaire a long long time ago if it weren’t for buying those records. I’m thinking about filing this lawsuit…….and I’ll get Johnny Cochran for a start.

personal responsibility has gone by the wayside in the country...
people are looking to blame their pathologies on everyone/everything but themselves...
facts:
-anyone that lives on fast food will likely either die a rather early death <OR> atleast grow obese
-anyone raising their children on fast food is not being a good parent.
-if you smoke, you may DIE
as someone guilty of many poor decisions about my health I most certainly wont be blaming the results on anyone but myself considering
(a) Marketing information isn't health information
(b) There was no lack of resources telling me that the decisions I made in the past were very unhealthy.
sick and sad.

I really have to wonder, if McDonald's were to offer this man a settlement of free McDonald's meals for the rest of his life whether he'd accept it.
It'd be good for both parties. He gets to eat the food he cannot resist eating anyway, and McDonald's wouldn't have to buy him food for him for very long... :)

Yes America is sue happy but I think this time it's for a good cause. I hope this guy wins only because fast food places are the most evil corporations around. Yes people should be smart enough and responsible enough not to eat only grease and lard which will make them fat and unhealthy but I also think that these fast food corporations do a lot of underhanded things like put meat flavouring in their fries and appeal to children whose mouths water everytime they see the golden arch or the yellow bell. Has anyone read "Fast food nation" I am a vegetarian and hated fast food places before I read that book but after reading it I just am sickened by people's ability to give into such a disgusting market like fast food. People should be smarter but most people buy that crap without giving it any thought, if suing fast food places will raise awareness on just how evil those places are then right on. But I'm just a vegetarian anarchist what do I know?

Well as an EX-Vegetarian (wife got sick of being Anemic and I've grown very fond of Fish) I can only agree that the corporations do their thing. And it's legal. And I don't think they should be sued for it.
HELL! Sue everyone that uses MSG, that most certainly is an addictive substance if I ever encountered one, why do you think people stuff their faces with junk food??
Suing people does not solve the problem it makes the effort to correct America's bad habits look like it's ran by a bunch of MORONS! And I HATE IT BECAUSE I WANT TO RAISE MY KIDS WITHOUT SO MUCH DYSFUCTIONAL EATING BEHAVIOR to model their behavior after.
There is a serious issue. I agree. I've struggled with a weight problem all my life and have read all of the books and I've done all the math and as a fat man --- I'VE DONE MY HOMEWORK ON WHY.
The only true way to create appropriate change is through illuminating the positive instead of giving McDonald's yet ANOTHER thing they can turn into a publicity machine.
Americans have no taste in food. Hell most American's eat too fast to taste their food. And when we eat meat, most of the time it's filled with hormones.... and there's hundreds of books on the topic so why should I regurgitate what should be common knowledge?
This is just another frustrating chapter in how America dumbs itself down and reliquishes the throne to the lowest common denominator.

People sue to make a quick buck. Any way to make money is just another reason to sue.
I find this case totally stupid. Yes fast food isn't good for you. I think even though we have a ton of advertising forced upon us there is also alot of information about how bad your average fast food is. Most people if you ask them on the street would say that yes fast food is bad for you. But we still eat it becuase it tastes good to most people.
And meat is good... steak is the best. :)
While we are suing McDonalds why don't we all join the bandwagon to ban Dihydrogen Monoxide

Heh. Recently I have tried for a more zen diet. Simpler foods, mostly vegetables and rice, noodles. Chicken and fish more often than beef - and only in moderation. I should probably start eating more fruits though.
I've noticed a bit of a difference wieght-wise. Energy-wise as well. It may just be that I have more carbs than anything else in the diet (breads rice, noodles and veggies...)
I have said it elsewhere and I say it now I like a salad with my steak.
Meat is murder. Your right. Some people have a problem with that. Others do not. I am one of those who tend to believe murder is neccessary to keep evil chickens from taking over the world. (see picture below).
My family is one of those who used to eat red meat every day three meals a day and then have beef jerkey snacks (meat flavored cereal.. yum) So I don't think I can ever end my red-meat eating for good (venison is just TOO damn good) but I am cutting down on it.
Frankly I don't think Fast food corporations are evil - merely self-serving institutions. And a lawsuit of this nature winning would do more harm than good. It would promote a more litigious society (I know its gone pretty far, but still...), and not raise awareness at all. People need to start taking responsibility for their actions.

Ya know, the most ridiculous part about this whole lawsuit is the fact that this fat lazy ¤¤¤¤¤¤¤ will probably get away with it. When the hell are the people who run this country wake the F**K up and do something about this. Tell that lazy piece of sh*t to quit wasting time in line at McDonalds and roll his overwieght ass to a gym like the 1000's of other people trying to make a change in their lives. As for the judge who would actually here this case he should be removed from the bench and sent to friggin Afghanistan. As for the schmuck lawyer... I hope he rots in hell!!!

I would rather we harvest animals from the wild then let the overpopulate and slowly starve to death. I feel its a little more human to quickly kill the animal then to have it slowly waste away over a few months.
Course everyone has their own view and I will keep eating meat because its good.
And yes its true that you have to kill to eat meat. Guess you can't do much about reality though. :)

I want the animal to have the same rights as us humans.
(Ok, now people are going to kill me for that)
I don´t like people having pets...(ehum, it´s true)
I guess it´s ok, as long as the owner treats the dog as a living creature and not as a thing he owns.
Meat is murder, yes yes yessssss!!!!
People are too egoistic nowadays, eating other living things just because they want to. I can accept the fact that the humans ate other animals many million years ago, but back then they had to eat that for survival. We don´t need that today, but still we do it. I love sallads :D

Maybe not, but it´s a good start.
even if no one ate meat anymore.. no more animals were killed by humans for food.. other animals would still kill them... plus our other sources for food would run out no doubt
But that would be natural. Other animals, e.g the lion kills other animals because it needs it. It can´t survive on grass. I can understand that!
And it we didn´t put all our energy on the meat from the animals, I´m sure we will find out a way to keep our sources for food.
plus.. not to say that human existence is all that important.. but what the hell else is a cow gonna do with its life? just sit out there and eat grass all day? how boring!
What says that the cow doesn´t like that? Sure the cow wont go the the first best disco he sees, but he would still be free to do what he wants, and he wont have to die for someone else.
i think god or whomever put animals on earth for us to eat.. there is no other use for them... or for us for that matter
I don´t believe in god, so i don´t believe in that, but anyway. We are here to live together. we all might be useless, but we are still alive. We are here. Why not make the best of it?

I mean, think of it this way: if you don't eat the animal, something else will. It's all about the food chain...some animals are higher up than others, and they get to eat the weaker ones.
IMHO, there are two types of vegetarians: ones who only judge themselves by what they eat, and annoying ones who think everybody should convert to their own ideology. I, for one, at least have some respect for the former.

But hey, as I said in an earlier post, if a lion kills another animal, I don´t blame him for that. he has to eat meat to be able to survive. Don´t drag those into this...
