I think not....not that Dave is leaving...but lets just say he did...they would have lost their ''voice''. I mean Martin is a good singer but does not have the harshnesss that Dave does and I dont think he could pull off songs like
Barrel Of A GUn
Dead Of Night
I Feel You
and Useless to name a few.
Wat yu guys think?

Briefly, they are doing it....
Fletcher doesn't play a single note for the band even live.
Dave and Martin are both working on solo albums, so technically
they can both function without each other, but it wont be DM.

Fletch does play live, not much, some triggering with his keys, but he's active on stage...
IMO, DM without Dave would be like the Beatles without Paul...It's just not the same :)

It would be pointless for Depeche Mode to exist without Dave.

Why would they bother making it otherwise? At this point they are loved more out of nostalgia than anything else. That nostalgia is tied to the lineup.
Some older bands recently attempted comebacks with replacements for key members (or without key members):
Styx,
Journey,
INXS,
it goes on..
Sorta like Jordan. Keeps going back cuz he misses the game but mere slices of their his former self.

NEVER!!!
Andy Fletcher once said, Martin's songs and David's voice are Depeche Mode.

DM is Martin/Dave. DM could not go on in my opinion without each other.
As for Fletcher? I don't think anyone would really miss him if he was just managing the band and not playing live.
Would anyone? I think I can go without the clapping. :-P

I think Dave is essential. Martin and Dave alone will never have the fire that Depeche Mode does. They're energy is makes up the songs we love.

BECAUSE THEY ARE DM...:)
Fletcher is always off sync when he performs. Almost
as his keyboard is set to mute.....
DM's live keyboard player always seems to be on time......

Martin's songs, David's voice, Alan's production and Fletch's clapping are Depeche Mode.
Accept no substitute!

I wish they had professionally video taped this show. Any one of the US dates during the Violator tour. I still think it was one of their best ever. I know there are some bootleg vhs tapes floating about out there, but I've never been able to locate a good copy of one. If anyone knows of one, let me know.

of course they CAN make without dave. There Martin!!:D
@ElectroM: ehehehe..:D about "they sure CAN make without Fletch"
but the most question is?...can they make it without Martin?..

They can't make it without Dave or Martin, the two of them present the present DM!
SM1: How old are you anyway?? You seem so childish... you don't see the things in the way they are or they should be but in the way you want to see them or in the way you prefer them!

DM was Alan Wilder, without him it´s another sound, another music... another band. :(

Is it our question to decide who´s DM or not?
I think not.
What are we asking about? Who´s DM to the name? Or who´s DM according to our feelings?
If Dave alone wishes to call himself DM, what can we do about that except screaming a bit? If Fletch alone wanna call himself DM, what can we do about THAT? Scream more I guess.
For me, Dave and Mart are natural members in DM, I don´t think I would see them as the same without them both, just as I wouldn´t see Alphaville on the same way without both Marian and Bernhard.

AMEN!! (Avil)
@EM: Excuse me?..me being "childish" how about you? about your statement about "they CAN go on without Fletch", Now, who is being "childish" Don't get me wrong. I don't like Fletch what-so-ever! but i don't go out and said those "childish" statement. ah..what the hell?..we are all CHILDISH, in our own little ways.;) sorry...for me having wracky-sense of humor. I am only human or am I?..:p
i want to add DM is MARTIN, DAVE AND WHOEVER YOU WANTED TO BE.;)

DM was the mix between Martin composing, Dave singing and Alan producing and doing sounds; If one of them leaves then the essence of the band is changing. They'll follow calling DM but I really should prefer they had change the name of the band. Imagine Alphaville without Marian, with other singer, it should be a shame, imagine U2 without Bono and The Edge guitars.
There are bands well defined and when they change I think they should split, they should begin another project.
In spite of that, I do like 'Ultra' and 'Exciter', less than others but I like.

The best time of DM history was while Alan was still on the band.
DM are still great but they really don't need Fletch, Peter and Christian are doing all his work and more.
Every time I remember Al and him not being in the band I wish to cry and ... (not for public)

In fact, I never Alan as something special in DM, could be because I came into the band so late, I´ve listened to them as long as I´ve been a devoted AV fan, 4 years now, since I was 14.
So it was quite natural for me to come into Ultra, and now later Exciter and enjoy these albums, even though the older ones are fun to listen to aswell.
Those who have been around since the very beginning might feel another way. It´s different when it comes to AV for me though.

No clapping? Are you insane? Fletch's notorious clapping motions are a crucial part of the entire stage show! Without him, how would the audience know when to clap and when not to?! It would mean complete chaos! Destruction! The end of the world! :D (OK, slight exaggeration ;))
Seriously, though, even though Fletch doesn't really do anything, I don't think the band would survive without him. Martin has said several times in interviews that without Fletch the band would've fallen apart. And it just wouldn't be the same without him. :)

While there are many people who do have that feeling of nostalgia towards DM, they are not loved out of nostalgia more than anything else... I don't know if you went to either one of the recent tours, but in the crowd I saw more young people than old... and the younger kids wouldn't have that feeling of nostalgia at all. They didn't grow up with DM and then go to the concert to remember their high school days because they're either still in it or recently graduated. Depeche Mode is loved because of the strength of their songs. Martin's lyrics have touched many people and have transcended generations. The music is very effective and very powerful and that will live on forever. As to the question at hand, no of course there could be no DM without David, he is Depeche Mode's image plain and simple. I think Martin is a very strong performer and could make a great career on his own, but he would never call it Depeche Mode.

Totally, and that's the way it has always been. Alan may have contributed a lot to the recording process, but it is Martin's songs and David's voice that have always been the driving force behind Depeche Mode.

If Dave ever did leave there would be no more DM. It's not Martin that makes DM and it's not Dave that makes DM, (Fletch doesn't count, for all we know he could be a cyborg) It's those together that makes Depeche Mode. It's bad enough that they lost Alan. You can see his lack of influence, but to lose the VOICE of DM would end the band.
