Snare Drum & The Mix

Anyone want to trade tips and techniques for getting the right snare sound cooking in the mix? Now, I know that for a dance track and say a more mellow ballad or what have you that this will be a different approach but some of the details may be the same and I think it would be cool to see who here can articulate how this part of the mix gets treated with eq, compression, reverb, etc.

Guess it would also depend on if you are working from a sample or drum machine or actually working with recorded drums. For drums that are actually recorded from a kit that someone is playing it is critical to get things right from the get go.

The mic selection and placement is key along with the proper use of noise gates and compression on the actual tracking part.
