Top albums from the 80's? This sounds like a definate thinker, but fun; and no genres? I could list a dozen bands that I discovered after the fact, but instead I'll limit myself to the bands and albums that I listened to the most through the 80's (that were released in the 80's).
Blondie - Autoamerican [1980]
Gang of Four - Yellow [1980]
Oingo Boingo - Only A Lad [1981]
The Cure - Pornography [1982]
Bauhaus - Burning From the Inside [1983]
Alphaville - Forever Young [1984]
Psychedelic Furs - Mirror Moves [1984]
Skinny Puppy - Remission [1984]
Love & Rockets - Express [1986]
Depeche Mode - Black Celebration [1986]
Lions & Ghosts - Velvet Kiss, Lick of the Lime [1987]
Pop Will Eat Itself - Box Frenzy [1987]
Flesh For Lulu - Long Live The New Flesh [1987]
Information Society - Information Society [1988]
Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine [1989]
New Model Army - Thunder and Consolation [1989]

I can't believe I forgot PWEI and New Model Army.
I personally choose to believe that PWEI were seriously an under-rated band and did a lot to open the door for other hip-hop, sample based artists of today. I know they're all doing their own things now, hell, Clint Mansell does fantastic soundtrack work, but I miss that band.
And NMA...well, it doesn't get any better than them.

Nope, just forgot them both.
(Makes a mental note to add Joe Jackson's Beat Crazy and I'm the Man, and whatever Steely Dan albums to his list.)
