I know that it is really a personal preference and can also be a function of the voice talent in question, but anyone have any preference for one or the other? Good or bad experiences in tracking versus mixing afterwards.

It is also important to keep in mind the mic preamp that you use as this also influences the audio.
If you have a tube-driven mic pre amp then you will get some of the same effects as with the tube mic. I have found that tubes in the path warm up the sound some where as the condensers are on the harsher/edgier side.
There is of course so much processing that can be applied to either so as to change this completely, but this is where things seem to start out.
