I dont know if you have had this topic before, but I couldnīt find it in that case,so Iīll ask again.
Please tell me if youīve already discussed this.
Which is the best synthpopband?
I must say Iris or De/Vision.

Hmmm...hard. I dont have a favorite. I love early DM (music for the masses, black celebration, a great reward), also early a-ha (hunting high and low and scoundrel days) and all pet shop boys. So I think is PSB. I also like OMD and some New Order (mostly the Technique album)

In my humble opinion, it's pre-SOFAD Depeche Mode. Aside from that, ugh, it's a tough call. Old New Order is definitely there as is De/Vision. I'd hesitate to credit Iris based on one release. To me, a bands worth is tested by time. If the material is consistent through out the years, and hasn't lost its edge, they get my vote. I have to hear more original material from Iris to decide if they are one hit wonders or not.

In my opinion, the best MODERN synthpop band out right now is AND ONE !!!!!! Without a doubt.
They have the right mixture of Dark Electro, Light Synthpop beats to accomodate a voice so spectacular (Naghavi), I can only compare them second to Depeche Mode. Sure, there are others that are exceptional in satisfying certain moods, but for me AND ONE is so versatile, they more than satisfy them ALL!!!
-OLMEK
P.S. You can also tell who's the best when you evaluate their live shows. I gotta tell ya, I've been fortunate enough to hear most of them from video taped shows or in person within Europe and abroad (Wolfsheim, Beborn Beton, PSB, Camouflage, Distain!, Condition One, VNV, Apoptygma, Aha, DeVision, Mesh, Elegant Machinery, etc.)
AND ONE is still.......number ONE!!!!! :D

Avil, thats kind of weird that you want people to post why they like the band when you didnt even post why you like the bands you do :)
well anyway, my favorite modern synth bands are probably Color Theory and Cosmicity.
Color Theory has some of the best songwriting in it. It is sung with so much emotion. Everytime I listen to his music I feel so sucked into his music. Its also of course an added bonus that the music that accompanies the words is spectacular as well. Standouts for me are The Perfect Song and Now I know. Ironic how they are strictly acoustic (only piano). BUt Tuesday Song ranks as one of my fav CD of all time.
Cosmicity..pretty much same reasons...great songwriting and music..IM a lil undure of this computer loving era hes entered into. no im kidding..its great.
Hehe shameless plug..I play some emotional stuff. not synthpop.... http://www.mp3.com/abreaction

Oh Iīm very sorry, totally forgot.
Well, I like Iris very much because they have a sound that are so much them. They music they make can really touch you. And the singer has such a beautiful voice,so itīs hard to not like them.
De/Vision then? Well itīs pretty much the same as with Iris except for the fact that De/Vision has done much more that Iris!!

Ever so vague a subject to be sure...... but hey, why not.
I think that from a legend perspective, DM, New Order and Kraftwerk share the title for reasons that y'all can fill in for yourselves...
As for newer groups..... I think The Echoing Green exemplifies what I appreciate most about this genre.... catchy songs, excellent vocals and they aren;t afraid to use guitar to heighten the artistry. Plus they put on a great live set.
I'm adding a new category: "most promising band" and that has to go to New Clear Sky for the reasons mentioned above and I say promising b/c of their limited catalogue (one album and remix). Though, if anyone heard that new single floating around "vast" its even harder to argue the contrary.
:p

:D
I was just thinking of the time at the CMJ Synthpop Showcase in NYC when the singer for New Clear Sky bumped his mouth on the microphone in the middle of his set.
I think I was the only person to notice that?
And as for best band, it depends on the mood I'm in.
I'm feeling sleepy right now because it's too hot here and therefore it is impossible to sleep, so maybe b!machine is the best at this time. (2:16 AM EST)
It's hard to classify any particular group as "the best" in such a broad genre, and even harder to come up with an answer that would satisfy everyone.
I'm going to give another shot at sleeping, so g'night all...

i don't know if it is possible to choose a "greatest synthpopband" I mean. that would be completely opinion.
I do think, that you can pick most influential, contributed the most to the development of the genre, etc. but then you eliminate a lot of current bands.
the greatest synthpopband is a lot of fun to speculate about though.

Since you are asking for our personal favorite, I've been most loyal to the Pet Shop Boys. I credit them with the meat hook to sink me into new wave with their radio promo version of "Opportunities (Let's Make Lots of Money)." To this day, I still find their music innovative. How a calm and collected duo could generate so much excitement remains a mystery to me.

Kraftwerk is a very good band, they have created so many different sounds and are absolutely one of the best. But it can be irritating to hear the too much...About one song every day is enough,or else you get sick of the plipp plott sounds...

I have to say that my favorite modern synthpop bands are:
1) And One
2) Iris
3) Daily Planet (hey Todd, you ever talk to them about picking up their new stuff?)
4) Distain!
Of the old mainstays ... I can't think of any that I wouldn't suck up a new album by and not love.
As for the Woflsheim question. I am not a fan, but I love the songs "Heroine, She Said", "It's Not Too Late" and "Once In A Lifetime". There other stuff is okay, but the lead singer's 3 note repertoire gets pretty old for me pretty quickly.

Daily Planet is one of my favourite bands as well. They have a sound that really are their own,but in the same time they have taken some influences from Erasure!

I don't think there is such a thing as the best synthpop-band. Every band has its moments.
For instance the album by IRIS is really great, but their MCD ANNIE WOULD.... is really bad.
AND ONE can make really great songs (Panzermensch, Body Nerv) and live they are really great, but the last album is so soft and lacking of hard basses that I only played it once. They are losing it !
KOMPUTER is one the best ever, but it takes long for them to make something new, so....
DE/VISION was good, but after while their songs all sound alike and now they discovered the guitars, so they can go to hell !!!
Synthpopsongs are easier to find than bands, I think !
But theat's just me talking...

although i think it impossible to choose a "greatest synthpopband" ever, i don't think it possible to choose the greatest songs either, for the same reason. it is all personal preference. Everyone has there reasons as to why this band is the greatest, or that band or whatever, but it doesn't amount to a pile of beans. it is only personal taste.

topics like these never die because people find they are always answering a little different everyday hehe =)
hmmm...today it looks like this:
1) mesh - melody, bitterness, energetic anger...if you need to remedy a brokenrelationship just press play
2) b! machine - cryptic sounding and cryptic reading...a musical experience open to your own interpretations and unlike anything out there
3) classic a box - tender and emotional...a voice of an angel.
4) vnv nation - lyrics so broad and powerful and synth arrangements to match...
5) wolfsheim - beautiful music even graced with orchestral stuff at times...
it's all very unique, emotional and for the most part darker...my desert island discography!

Itīs a really catchy song, at least the tv-edit, but who is this Mark? Is he the singer of Mesh??

Yazoo of course. Upstairs At Eric's is the all time classic and my personal favorite synth pop disc. Vince Clarke and Alison Moyet peaked on this record. Neither were ever as good. This is in no way to take away from You And Me Both. That is great too.
Speaking of Yazoo. Does anyone know what instruments were used during the recording. I'm trying to approximate that sound myself and would like to know. thanks.

To whoever asked about Wolfsheim, I've only heard "Once in a Lifetime" and was blown away. The lead singer has an amazing amazing voice.
I'm very fond of:
The Nine- I bought Dreamland without ever hearing them, and they are truly amazing...they sound 80ish with today's influence mixed all in. European
Kaj- "In Your Mind" is very dark, melancholic, and dreary. With a sweet Mediterranean sound, this album is unique. Love this.
Shades of Grey- Longest Day is a great catchy catchy lil' album. Perfect Wine is also a lovely song.
New Clear Sky- Cosmic sounding...like they're coming from some dark mysitcal planet that's about to explode.
Elegant Machinery- Saw them live at Synthcon and they blew me away. they're extremely poppy, without heavy bass. extremely catchy songs...that's their forte.
There are lotsa bands out there who are great

The Nine have really captured me lately. Like glo, I picked up Dreamland without listening to much by them, except stuff on compilations (My Fallacy, particularly). What I found, much to my delight, is that they have an almost unheard of ability to match good, bouncy dance beats with really heavy ripped-out guitar snarls. I like it . . . . I like it a lot.
Not to mention that they (and their road manager) are really cool.

Hi there,
Synth Pop.....oh yes, what a lovely thing.
Elegant Machinery - it doesn't any better than this.
Too bad they stopped.
SPOCK - First albums are really great. NOw they are getting too ordinary. Their business card were the great analog approach and Kraftwerk-like sounds, but this dissappeared totally.
IRIS - All I can say is WAAUW, allthough their remixes aren't that exciting. But the originals are brilliant. Great melodies, don't care about the content.
KOMPUTER - Used to be I START COUNTING, then FORTRAN 5, but that was just a beginning for something better than KRAFTWERK. Only bad thing is that they didn't do anything for 2 years. Waiting in anticipation. Got them live on CD, sweeeeeeeeet !
JOY ELECTRIC - great sounds, stupid voice !
AVANTGARDE - They know their stuff really well.
AND ONE - Last album is way too soft for what they can do. At least the remixes by STEVE NAGHAVI of other bands' material is like it should be (Project Pitchfork, Das Ich, Cleen,...)
BEBORN BETON - One of the best albums ever is NIGHTFALL. And of course the remixCD they recently released is very good, but this isn't the band, is it ?
POUPPEE FABRIKK - Not really synth pop, but the pure Gods of EBM of the old skool.
I could go on forever.
There are really some good bands out there, pity some of them don't get the credits they deserve.
See ya

For me. I would have to say The Human League and Erasure were what got me started into synthpop ... I trace it back to "Don't You Want Me" in 1982, that pretty much set my mind on synthpop. And then in 1985 I got hooked on Erasure after Oh L'amour and Who Needs Love Like That.
Even during the disco decade of the 70's, when I was only about 6 years old, I remember being hooked on Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" (produced by eurodisco mogul Giorgio Moroder) on account of it's being entirely electronic. Even today it's completely awesome, and I think a lot of electronic music these days owes its existence to Moroder.
Add to the list New Order, PSB, Red Flag, OMD ... newbies like Electrosquad and Avantgarde. There's just so much out there it's hard to choose one over the other.
Here's another one everyone seems to have forgotten about: Data. Nobody probably remembers them anymore, but in 1985 they did a song called "Stop" ... they're one of the few female-fronted synthpop outfits that came out in those days. Really good stuff, shame they've been forgotten.

Elegant Machinery(carried the torch for 11 years...awesome)
Yazoo( Vince Clarke...Alison Moyet...perfect)
Human League(love action...first song I heard from them...killer)
Eurythmics (Sweet Dreams lp..after that they went downhill fast)
Cosmicity-(great, great, great...can't get enough)
Neuropa-(Aussie style...great songs, great sounds)
I'm sure I will think up some more.

Well, simple to do really ... you will need the following things:
1. Music Match Jukebox
2. Audio cables ... depending on whether your stereo turntable
has RCA outputs, or headphone output only ... and on whether
your soundcard has a line in, or a mic-in only
If your turntable has RCA outputs, and you're recording directly into your mic input, then you'd need a Y-splitter cable, 2 RCA male plugs to one 1/8" stereo male. If you have headphone outputs only, then it's a 1/4" stereo male to a 1/8" stereo male.
There is an option on MusicMatch that allows you to select your recording source (it can be either CD, Line In, or Mic in ... one of the last two would be what you select if you were recording external audio) ... then you would choose the format for the audio to be saved in (I usually go MP3 160 kbps).
In this fashion, I have captured alot of my vinyl onto mp3. It works really well.

Synthpop is so great.
Except for some bands (especially Americans apprently) that use pumping drums. It's really out of place.
For the rest, keep 'em coming.
But I do hope that Erasure's rerelease of LOVEBOAT is better than the first try. Mute records wasn't that pleased with the result. I can imagine. It's badly mixed, totally missing melodies and not one song that makes me say "Waauw" like they managed to do before every time.
Let's hope for the best

Some time ago I bought a CD from COSMICITY called 'Synthesized', I don't know if you know it.

I've gotta strongly disagree with you Mute Man about the drum issue. As an artist myself AND a fan of a hard, driving beat I know how important it is for me to have that key in my music. I'm trying to convey something intense with my music. If I use pansy sounding drums, the delivery wouldn't be the same. It's still Synthpop to me and those who listen to it, just maybe on a different level than what you're used to.
That's the greatest part about this scene. We all come from various backgrounds musically, and the styles that influence us find their way into our own creations. How boring would it be if we all sounded alike? We need individualism and diversity in this scene, and I feel that it could use more open-mindedness. Not everyone has to sound like DM to be respected or enjoyed. There is not wrong or right way, just what comes from inside.

Well to be honest, i share the "Mute Man" point of view on the pumping drums heavy style or not!!!
i don't really like all these bands using and abusing of the Tr 808 or 909 roland drum machine,or clone beatbox,or whatever...
i don't think Synthpop is just that, listent to EM,the guys are using Linn drum machines, old stuff as well, but not declining the beat to just one heavy pumping rythm!!!
Well this is the mode today to play this way,it starting to get boring nowadays...everything sounds the same!!!

A less beating drum can't make every band sound alike.
To me it sounds like "Hey I want to make techno, but I'm hooked to the eighties bands. Huh, what should I do ?"
Neither Elegant Machinery, or Avantgarde, nor Iris use those kicking drums and they don't sound alike at all.
The drums are just a part of the songs, they don't make a song.
Every band has its way of writing, playing and thinking and if one uses less kicking drums, it won't change the song a bit.
In fact I'm sure that it makes it more pleasant to listen to.
The same goes for the band JOY ELECTRIC.
They have got some very great sequences, but the kick underneath takes away the power of a great baseline.
The kick should be PART of it and not be the leader of the pack.

hey guess what people, believe it or not, there is no right or wrong way to make synthpop, heavy metal, or what ever other type of music. Mute man says the pulsing beat should be part of the music not the leader, well maybe that is the style he prefers to listen to, it doesn't mean that having a heavy beat makes it wrong. that is flat out ridiculous.
Monolithics album is one of the best from last year, and it would not have made the impact it did without the heavy beats that it has in it.
conversely, the variety and different aproaches to synthpop is part of what makes it SOOOOO attractive to me. It appears in so many different forms. that's is what keeps it interesting.
oh well that was my 2 cents worth.

Some of my all time favorite synth tracks had heavy drums ... "Blue Monday" and "Bizarre Love Triangle" By New Order (I'm referring to the Shep Pettibone mix here) ... I thought it was cool. That's the kinda stuff that makes me wanna turn the volume up and shake the house. :)

I don't know what is meant still after reading this whole thread about "pumping techno drums." Nearly every band uses them. Elegant Machinery, Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, Iris, etc. They all have them to some extent or another.
What is different about Cosmicity's drums than those of Iris? Nothing. Perhaps they are equed for more bass, but so what. Mark's style incorporates some detroit house elements into his music, especially his remixes. I think that's cool.
It's far more interesting than what I have heard from Iris. I mean, they wrote some good songs a few years ago but nothing that was truely innovative or unique. I like bands that have a unique sound and add different elements to their music. Cosmicity does that well.
Disconnect was a very enjoyable album when it came out. But there have been a number of releases since then that are far better.

The band most often on my playlist has to be VNV Nation. Their lyrics have very serious themes, but are science-fiction-ey enough that it is not a flagrant bumper sticker on the forehead, saying "I AM A POLITICAL SONG!". (Kingdom, and Darkangel spring to mind.) VNV is still dark enough to satisfy the goth that is moaning inside me, and bright enough to make me go out and shake my booty when I'm getting around:woohoo:

Well, I love SPOCK, but I don't like their last album one bit.
It's too ordinary.
They were loved for their blips and beeps, but now it's plain ordinary synthpop like so many.
And the voice of YO-HAAN is really awful.
He should remain musician, not a singer.
And I won't even go into the remixes they released....
But they used to be the number one in synthpop for sure.
In fact, last evening I compiled a CD for myself with all their best tracks (according to me).....My car is filled with joy !!!!

Another two groups that have been forgetten by most. TORCH SONG. Their LP Wish Thing has been in constant rotation at my house since 1984. Anyone remember "Prepare To Energize"? First time I heard that song was 1984 in that Tom Hanks movie BACHELOR PARTY! It was great so I waited for the end credits so I could find out who did it.
THE UNITS. From San Francisco. They were a seriously good group from the early 80's that I miss to this day. They used to get played a lot on THE QUAKE FM99. Good stuff.
Until next time.......:woohoo:

Unfortunately TORCH SONG has been done for years. William Orbit was the mastermind has been very busy since producing for the likes of Madonna (Ray Of Light)
THE UNITS I really don't know what they are up to. I will assume that they broke up years ago also.
Sorry.:(

Depeche Mode, Violator and earlier. I would say that they're the best simply for what they have done for the scene. Most everyone that likes synthpop has been influenced at one time or another by their music, and they've help open doors for lesser known synthpop groups, paved the way if you will...
