Been listening to the mixes on the new DM single. I have been a bit on the disapointed side as far as remixes go for DM. I don't know if it is just old school, or i just have my head stuck in the ground somewhere, but i like remixes that retain more of the melody or original idea of the song.

I was just curious as to what everyone else thought in regards to mixes. Not necessarily DM, The new single just got me thinking about this that is all.

I am disappointed to hear these mixes for the "Dream On" single, I honestly can't believe they chose those mixes. Other then that, I like the Original

I like the DM mixes from Violator, hope they have one of those guys mix the next single.

Peace

Yep, I agree I can't stand the Ultra
and Dream On remixes they suck BIG
TIME! Too much hip hop influences
for my liking. I also like my mixes
either extended or exploring more
instrumentation within the track.

That is how i felt. i like extended and mixes that stay within the concept of the song, much better than something barely recognizable at times.

Well but Iīm sure that the really fanatic DM-lovers appriciate these remixes...

i consider myself a fanatic. i have close to 200 dm and dm related cds, i buy everything they put out regardless. but, just because i am a fanatic, doesn't mean i have to adore everything they do. infact, dm didn't do the mixes. they hired other people to do the mixes. these more recent mixes just don't happen to be mixes i enjoy.

it doesn;t make me any less a fan.

I remember when a DM remix was something to look foward to. Now they're just uninspired hack jobs. Such a shame.

I'm gunna be the voice of dissent here.

Okay, not all the mixes are stellar. But I'm fond of the Kid606 mix and the Bushwacka Vocal mix. They both take the song in different directions.

And the Bushwacka mix is very club-friendly, which is pretty much required these days for a single to be sucessful.

The remixers of the olden days...well, Francois K is still remixing but he's very much doing house music now (as evidenced on some of his more recent remixes), but a lot of 'em are just plain gone or are doing something else now.

I listened to the "Get the Balance Right" 12" mix this past weekend and...wow, early extended mixes were cheeeeeesy. :)

well as much as i enjoy the old cheesy extended ones, :D

I don't mind the newer remixes so much as i can still hear the melody of the song and/recognize it. Some mixes are soooo different it is like a completely different song.

There seems to be a fine line between remixing a song and rebuilding it. I do like a lot of remixes that sound completely different than the original, but again I like there to be some of the original song left (like vocals). For example, I found the BT mix of "It's No Good" to be spectacular, although it sounded nothing like the original.

But then there are some absolutely crap-tacular remixes like that as well.

Oh well. A dilemma for the ages.

Mike (and others) -

Check out the promo-only Pink Noise mixes, they're really good.

The BT Mix was available for a while on a Paul Oakenfold mix CD (the title of which escapes me right now), albeit in an edited form - it had the 3-minute ambient intro cut off and the final two minutes or so sliced as well. It was still about 6 minutes long after that!

I've seen the full version on Napster and a few bootlegs.

Thank you for the info, NullDevice. If you happen to remember the name of that Oakenfold release, let me know :)

Seems to me the Ultra mixes were overall fairly solid.

Barrel: Well, okay, hit and miss. The underworld mixes were pretty lame. But the 3phase mix was okay, and there were a few others that weren't bad - not great, but not bad.

ING: The Hardfloor mix was pretty tasty, albeit exactly what you'd expect from Hardfloor, the Bass Bounce mix was alright, especially with that little countermelody thing he did with the vocal layering, and the Andrea Parker one was alright too although it doesn't really stand out in my mind.

The "Home" mixes uniformly sucked. But that's unsuprising considering they were made from a ballad. Useless on the other hand had some fine mixing - the CJ Bolland mix was a lovely hard mix of the song and the K&D session jazzed it up sufficiently. I still hear that one periodically during clubs' slower sets. It helped that K&D put it on their own CD.

OWILM - well, the GusGus mix, which depsite being a bit too long, just rocked my world.

I've observed that recently the mxies on the advance singles - and in fact the advance singles themselves - are usually not all that representative of what's to come. IFY and BoG didn't sound much like the rest of the album, and the mixes on all of 'em were fairly uninspired. Dream On seems fairly the same way. Although the song is a bit more representative of the album, the mixes are fairly hit-and-miss. They all seem to be very much in line with the whole IDM sound that Mark Bell imparted. IDM mixes are always a little oblique, though...these seem to be fine examples of the genre but do leave a bit to be desired from the remix side. I still love the Bushwacka Vocal mix, though. And the Pink Noise isn't too shabby either.

It'll be interesting to see where things go - I've heard Atom(tm) is has remixed a track for an upcoming single - his mixes are always wonderfully weird. I'm surprised Mark Bell himself hasn't mixed any yet - his remixes of Bjork's "Alarm Call" were great.
