...sequencer software eg cubase? I am new to this and now wish to connect my Yamaha keyboard to the computer with a view to play, record and edit, copy and change the recorded music about. What will I need?

Early in the history of both, audio edit software actually modified the audio data, whereas sequencer software edited MIDI data (the controller events that trigger the synthesizers who create the resultant audio data), but more recently, they've merged a lot -- most contemporary programs do both (Cubase has evolved into this).
