there is a club that my roomates friends go to where people dress like they are goth in all black and all but all they play on that nite is industrial i think so i thought that meant rivethead

short question is are these two related?

Goth vs Industrial vs Rivethead vs etc. It's a question that seemingly has been asked hundreds of times and has resulted in twice as many explanations (and numerous debates and flamewars), and none of them make the person asking the original question happy; since it's usually a point of view thing. There are those clubs that cater primarily to either Goth or Industrial, but I think the reason why you tend to hear both in a club is because the promoters try to appeal to the largest crowd possible to ensure a good turn out. Doing a club that caters to one or the other is like chopping off one of your feet. Besides, there are so many bands out there where it's a fine line between them being considered "Goth" or "Industrial", bands like Skinny Puppy for instance; you could argue either way. As for the wearing of all black, as if they're Goth but listen to Industrial, well, black is universally accepted. Now if said people were wearing a puffy pirate shirt and said they only listen to industrial, then I would worry and be confused as well.

But I guess the short answer to your basic question is, yes, they are related in the grand scheme of things. That was an easier question than asking about their sub-genres and such. Now THATS a headache.

In closing I'd just like to say, don't ask me. Hell, I don't understand the new "Mall/Goth" styles and music. Bah.

In the DC area, they are definitely related. The intersection of the two sets is very close to the union of the two sets. I see a lot of the same people at, say, a Bauhaus or Sisters of Mercy or Mission show (goths) as I do at a Skinny Puppy or Front Line Assembly or Front 242 show (industrial/EBM).

I think it has a lot to do with the larger 'dark' scene that has evolved. Look at the artist lineup at WGT or Mera Luna and you see a decent mix. How the fans accumulate for the different performances, I don't know. But in the overall scheme of things, you may like both, but you you probably prefer one over the other.

Personally I've always felt myself to be more of a rivethead. I'll take FLA over Virgin Prunes any day.

also i know of some industrial bands that are well known and more or less still doing new stuff but what about goth music
are there new or current goth bands that are popular? do you guys know?

Pretty similar, like I said, black is universal, so are boots. Heh. Most Industrialites tend to lean more towards either the Cyber or Militant look, where as your typical Goth will still opt for a more "elegant" (for a lack of a better term) or punkish look. Hell, didn't Voltaire right a book on this stuff? Ha! I'm no expert. I get confused over what the difference between Emo and Goth is these days. Damn generation gaps.

As for what Goth bands are still around, there are quite a few that have either still been around or are making come backs. Depends on what you consider to be Goth. I always thought I was Death Rock/Goth back in the day but really, looking back upon it now, I was really more into the Post-Punk type bands (and Death Rock).
