Just watching TV the other night not paying much attention when I heard that familiar intro to one of my fave synth songs, Don't Go. The commercial is for a Honda Minivan. I guess Vince is making some nice $$$ for that one.

Maybe he's struggling for cash, wishing he was back in Mode....nah!

That is such a cheery picture. I have yet to see this commercial, might see it tomorrow when watching Law & Order. :)

Good to hear about Yazoo (Yaz in the US) getting such good exposure. I'm sure Vince does make money from this advert. Did you all know that Vince offered Depeche Mode his song 'Only You' when he was leaving but they turned it down. I wonder what that would have sounded like?
Much the same ;-)

Yazoo for Honda, Alphaville for Saturn, Lene Lovich for Target... The ad world has been using some great music this year indeed...

yea... tell me about it, i nearly couldn't believe my ears when i heard that 'new toy' by lene lovich on my tv!
its a double edged sword you know... on one hand i'm happy the bands i like are getting royalties, etc... but then on the other hand its like... ew, now they're going to be associated with this product forever (at least to regular people)

At least Target is a bit cooler than Wal-Mart. Target seems to have a good image, and they use great music. Devo, B-52's, Lene Lovich, etc... There's also some new commercial with a cover of Jesus Jones' "Right Here, Right Now..."
It can revive interest in older groups and promote new, lesser known groups. Look what Mitsubishi did for Dirty Vegas and Telepopmuzik..

The HONDA campaign uses TWO Yazoo songs. Both commercials are for the minivan. The female version of the commercial uses SITUATION and the male version uses DON'T GO. The commercials are funny, the yesteryear 80's wear of the actors is super fun!!

I haven't seen the one with SITUATION yet. I'll have to look for that one. I wonder if they have them on the Honda website.......

I caught the "Don't Go" commercial on the TV yesterday and I was a bit surprised to hear it myself. I guess all these 80's songs are going to be in more and more commercials ... I caught Thomas Dolby's "She Blinded Me With Science" once in a shampoo commercial while my wife was watching "Days of our Lives" ;) (she's really not a soap addict tho ...) :)

Anyone-else slightly bemused at the choice of "Don't Go" for a car commercial? :-)

"New Toy" is a great track but not the best one on the No Man's Land Album. I prefer "It's You, Only You (Mein Schmerz)" or "Blue Hotel".
Not sure about being associated with any product forever, most people have a short term memory. They'll know it while the campaign is going but a months after, I'd bet most people would be hard-pressed to match a song against a product (unless you showed them the ad).

I'm fine if the song is kept intact and it's just used as the background music. I don't like when they take the songs and change the words or find someone else to sing it for the commercial. For instance, I HATE the Swiffer commercial using Devo's "Whip It" because they've changed it to You Must Swiff It. Awful. :(
On the other hand, I was pleased with the use of Forever Young in that car commercial earlier this year . . . as long as the song is left intact, I view it as more money for the bands I love which hopefully will mean more music. :)

No surprise these songs are being used in ads. Young execs in the ad world grew up with this music and now have influence in the choice of music. I think it's great.

Normally, I would agree with you. However, I'll make an exception for this one. Mark Mothersbaugh, Devo's lead singer, agreed to redo the vocals for the ad. He said it would further prove the concept of de-evolution (i.e. even Devo's songs were not immune from the very process the band has been warning us about).

I was surprised by the Yaz song in the Honda ad, but not nearly as much as "New Toy" in the Target ad...my jaw hit the floor..my boyfriend just laughed at over how stunned I was.... I am still reeling from Robert Smith selling "Pictures of You" to HP...

I work in advertising. I'd say it's the creatives in the agencies that are choosing these great songs. It was the artsy-fartsy punk-asses in high school and college that went on to persue careers in advertising and design. You don't see too many jocks getting in to graphic design trying to put classic rock in their tv spots. So, cheers for us!
Pictures of You was a shocker. The song works and all nice in the spot. But, I can't help to think "sell-out". Perhaps, it hits too close to home. But if it helps re-kindle interest in synthpop/80's and 80's enfluenced music now, that's good for the entire scene. I'd like to find those creatives and kiss them.
