I do, but a lot less frequently than I used to -- I go over a friend's house every weekend to watch movies on his home theatre. It's like a movie theater, only without the strangers and the sticky floor.

Last ones I saw in the theater were Beowulf, Ultraviolet, and 28 Weeks Later, I think. I might try and catch No Country For Old Men.

Good point, I also do not go out often and will be even less when I upgrade to an hd dvd player. The last thing I saw was the new Harry Potter flick and like you said it was higher $$$ than I expected.

True for all of the above.

For me, I really do not go out much anymore at all. The whole theater experience is just not what it used to be and the "sticky floors" and "rude people" do not help this either.

I am actually surprised that this industry is still alive and well.

movie theaters are like some dirty dives these days
i saw something on pbs that showed these grand movie theaters of the past that looked like some kings palace and all that with chandeliers
now it is mostly just dirty and smelly

There is one movie that I really would like to see, unfortunately it only shows in the UK right now ...

"Control" ... the biopic about Ian Curtis, the singer for Joy Division (nee New Order) who killed himself in May 1980. This band has been one of my biggest musical influences.

Again, I don't go to much movies anymore ... I think the quality of most movies has gone downhill since the 80's, much like the popular music.

I go every little now and then. It's more social to go to the movies than watching a movie at home you've rented or, god forbid, downloaded. :)

If you want to see a good movie, watch Pan's Labyrinth. It's fantastic.

I don't think all theaters are bad -- I like the newer ones that have stadium style seating -- not a bad seat in the house.

Hehe, but at home you can lay on the couch with your ugliest clothes on, eating as much candy as you want without disturbing anyone (except your company, if you have one). And you can talk. And go to the toilet. And go to the toilet again. :piss: (<--that's not how I do it though :ofblink:)
That's some major advantages with watching movies at home instead of going out.

Wohoo.

Speaking of movies and dvd's.

Any Blade Runner fans here? I think that the "final cut" 25 year anniversary DVD is coming out soon. Any takers on this all time classic?

Blade Runner is my favourite movie of all time. Alas, I can only barely justify getting it, as one version is only available on the high-def box set, but I have most of the others in various formats (mostly laserdisc). Believe it or not, I'm one of those people who prefers the theatrical cut (narration, etc.).

I am seriously considering getting it, but I'm not in any rush, since I'd have to get a high-def player as well (I watch most of my movies at my two friends, anyway).

Blade Runner is a great movie. I am also not sure if there is any reason to get this new cut of it, if it is really that new. I already have it in some "director's cut" or other moniker so this is just maybe a remaster as far as I am concerned. Besides, my copy looks damn good as is.

Found out a little bit more detail about this -- there appear to be multiple versions of the box set: 4 disk, 5 disk, and 5 disk + briefcase sets on DVD, Blu-Ray, and HD-DVD. The biggest ommission appears to be the 5 disk set on DVD without the briefcase -- you have to get the twice as expensive 5-disk set with the briefcase just to get the "workprint" (which is an early version, not the new cut that is on every one of those sets). But at a difference of $30, that's still less expensive than getting a high-def player and getting one of the cheaper 5-disk high-def sets without the briefcase. Does that make sense? (I don't mean from a marketing perspective -- they're pushing high-def, of course it makes sense -- I mean, did my post make sense?)

How many different cuts/versions are there? I have seen the movie several times over the years but the edits seemed very similar to me. Is there new footage in any of these?

I think it would have to be something special to get so many versions, 5 discs and all.

BTW. I am assuming we are still talking about Blade Runner...

Personally, I'm tired of the directors cut, final cut, east meets west cut, and we need more money cut. From the movies that I had watched that fell into this category I could not see the difference althogh there may have been technical differences, from the overal experience it was the same movie over and over again.

From Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blade_Runner#Versions), there's: the workprint, the isolated sneak preview cut, US theatrical cut, international/Criterion cut, director's cut, and final cut (and then there's the cut cut, but that doesn't count). I have the director's cut on DVD and LD, the Criterion cut on LD, and ...one other version -- I think it's the pan & scan version of the US theatrical cut, but uncut, so it might be the same as the Criterion version I have.

On the box set, they have the US theatrical cut, the international cut, director's cut and final cut -- the final cut being the new one that they came up with especially for this box set, I like Nautilus' name for it, the "we need mo' money" cut -- and, on the 5 disk version of the box, the workprint.

I love the movie, but the most significant differences are between the US theatrical/international cuts and the director's/final cuts -- the voice-over and the alternate endings (from what I heard -- haven't seen the final cut yet) being the two most marked differences. Haven't seen the workprint or the sneak preview version. I'll report back how different the director's cut is from the final cut after I see it, probably this weekend. I've heard they're minor.

The earliest DVD release of the director's cut completely turned me off from DVD for years -- aliasing and artifacts galore. Sucky.

Though I completely understand someone who doesn't love this movie as much as I do being tired of all the different versions.

Alternate endings are cool and are definitely worth the buy if you are really into the movie. With some releases however it's way too confusing as to what you are getting with all the different versions.
