It’s as simple as that. So why not download the MP3s and stick 'em on your iPod right this very second? Just pop over to dirtyelectronic.com and download the whole EP in 1 easy click. Also available at last.fm, iLike, and many more sites to come.

How far can you go with this whole free thing? As far as you can conceive. Wanna e-mail the songs to all your friends? Do it. Put 'em on BitTorrent? DO IT. Post the link anywhere/everywhere you want. Tell your co-workers. Why not? It's free! Start a firestorm of downloading. Download these MP3s and send them anywhere. I want ya to! And I'm confident that as people listen to these songs, they'll want the rest of 'em (and the new ones I'll release in the future), and I'll make a few bucks to pay expenses that way. So don't you worry about my finances. Instead, please consume this music with reckless abandon.

Thanks for listening.

-m

Mark, you are the coolest. As a big fan of your previous project, Cosmicity, I certainly will check out this new stuff.
Speaking of Cosmicity, your covers of I Want A Dog and Pure Imagination are just incredible. They are still in regular rotation at Casa De Eric 31! (Along with plenty of your own compositions!)

Hey, thanks so much.
Yeah, it occured to me recently that there are quite a few folks out there who liked Cosmicity but have been weary about giving my new material a chance (paying $15 for a CD is a sort of a tough thing to do for music you don't know a lot about). This way, you get to give it a good solid test (by actually owning several of the songs) before you have to buy anything. And I'm feeling confident that this will actually lead to sales, because I know these songs are good, and the more people hear them (on their iPods etc.) the more they'll crave additional tracks from the albums.

Hope you enjoy it.
Why I'm doing it: People won't buy your music if they haven't heard it / decided they like it. They just don't. So giving tracks away has become the new radio play (since no one listens to the radio anymore and/or indie artists don't get played). But artists can still put some stuff out there for free that people can get into, and then hopefully they like it enough to come back and buy more - or at least buy your new releases in the future.
It makes sense to me. I know I've gotten into many bands that had free MP3s available on last.fm that I downloaded just for kicks. I usually end up getting their albums (or at least more songs via iTunes). Here's hoping people do the same for my music.

I think this is true. The market has simply become what it is where you just give far more than the restrictive "just buy" with brief snippets of the past. The music transfer between artist and listener has simply pro(di)gressed (not sure which) into this current day way of working.

It really has. So, strange as it is, we try to shift with the times. Music has always been a tough way to make money... composers used to have to be a member of a royal court to make money just a few hundred years ago. Recorded music made everyone adjust, and now that recorded music has gone digital, musicians need to adjust again. I think it'll stabalize a bit more, at some point, and we'll all get used to the new way.

Unfortunately, yes. I hope that this really is an adjustment and not a slide towards a world where music has no value at all.
