Time for a little fun, at my own expense perhaps. I would like to hear from you folks...What is the one piece of gear that you regret getting rid of?

Over the last 25 years, I have owned many pieces of gear that I wish now I'd held on to. When the latest and greatest new synths came out I would do what it took to get it. Most of the time that worked against me. Now for the dumbest trade of all time.... Once I traded a Prophet Ten, with dual keys and retrofitted with MIDI for..... a Roland D-50!!! Aargh!!!!

Let's see. One is now extremely rare, worth several grand and the other you can pick up for $300 on ebay any day of the week. Well, at least the PG-1000 came with it!

I regret selling my 909 for $400 10+ years ago.

Also, I once gave away a Korg Poly 61

Maybe I can see giving away a Poly 61 out of the sheer generosity of it all, but trading a Prophet 10? Egad, man!

But, I lent a friend my SH-101 in the mid 80s and haven't seen it since! :(

Everything I've regretted, I eventually buy again, then I wonder why I went through so much hassle, as I usually never get as good a deal the subsequent times, and buying/selling can be very disruptive. I'm especially bad with drum machines as I delude myself into thinking I can get by with samples, which of course I can in a technical sense, but I start missing the interface and all the fun involved. In terms of creativity it's not the same. I've sold two Jomox Xbase's and one Airbase (currently I'm surviving without any of these sounds) and I'm on my second 808. To sell the first 808 was probably the stupidest because of the triggers and so forth it is really useful for controlling other gear, also it really comes alive when processed, the samples I've made even through good converters don't have quite the same effect, even if it's only a psychological effect. the second machine I got is in kind of questionable cosmetic condition, I miss the first one which was "mint" and at an even lower price! still, sometimes I run low on cash and it becomes easiest to sell the drum machines, and against my better judgment I'll start "recirculating" through gear.

I haven't had any deals I regretted, but I have one or two that I'm sure the other person regretted. I picked up a Clavia Nord Lead 2 for $400. It had been opened and turned on TWICE.

Like I said...It was the dumbest trade of all time! Well, except for maybe the Alaska deal with the USSR. Its not the only dumb trade either. I let a JD-990 go in trade for a Oberheim Matrix 6 (which lasted about 3 months), a Korg Polysix and just to be generous...the guy threw in a Siel DK-600. Actually the Siel was pretty cool, until it died about 6 months later! And then, the Polysix became a money pit.

Now you know why I'm not involved in financial planning!
